This is Smoothie Joe. Not pictured is his brother, Juice Gary. These are my Asheville juicery BFFs and also the co-owners of Mountain Juicery. And if you head in this week, they’ll make you a special smoothie of the week—aka my very own healthy smoothie recipe I swear by!
It’s safe to say I have a smoothie every day. Whether I make it myself or drop in to my favorite smoothie place, it’s a routine I can’t shake—and am somehow not tired of yet! My rule is: make your smoothie worth it. How can you find a balance with nutrition, taste and fulfillment in a smoothie? Well, I finally did and it changed my life.
I tried smoothies for years and came to the conclusion they just weren’t healthy—I always felt horrible after I had them. A lot of smoothie shops use processed ingredients, including proteins that can be hard to digest and make you bloated, produce with preservatives or added sugars, and milk with preservatives and carrageenan (I will go into carrageenan in another post another time). Thanks to Mountain Juicery (you may remember them from my feature on a delicious cold-pressed mimosa with a twist) you can skip the bloat and unwanted ingredients. Your fruit and veggie portions of the food pyramid are covered–your ultimate breakfast, lunch, snack or dinner treat with all-natural ingredients, antioxidants, superfoods and a protein boost are just a friendly conversation and Vitamix away.
I mix up my smoothie every now and then for good measure, but for nearly two years, I’ve had the same smoothie. Every. Single. Day. My mind, body and taste buds love it, apparently. Something about the idea of all of these nutrients and vitamins packed into one cup, on top of it being a delightful nourishing treat, is very satisfying–and convenient.
So how I follow my rule of making the most of my smoothie: protein, serving of fruit and serving of vegetables are a MUST. So to make that happen, I put a twist on one of Mountain Juicery’s regular menu items—and boom, my healthy smoothie was born, which they kindly refer to as the “Ferriss special.” (Thanks for making me feel important, MJ.)
